Game of the Week #591
Every now and then you come across a game that is not just grandmaster level, but extraordinarily creative. In the German Bundesliga Frederik Svane, now rated 2626, played such a game against Tigran Gharamian, who is an experienced strong grandmaster.
After a very abstract pawn sacrifice in the opening, both players were quickly on their own and had to solve unusual problems. As the game proceeded, the position became more challenging for both White and Black.
Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?
This week’s show
In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
