Game of the Week #589

The European Club Cup was held in Albania this year and was won by Offerspill Sjakklubb, the Norwegian club of Magnus Carlsen. The world number one was in fine form and in the fifth round there was a very interesting clash of generations with Vincent Keymer. As so often, Carlsen came up with an unexpected, seemingly innocent opening choice. Keymer lost his way surprisingly quickly, but the way in which Carlsen converted was very instructive.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
