Game of the Week #572

At the Norway Chess Tournament Magnus Carlsen disappointed with eight draws and one defeat. He did win seven of his eight Armageddon tiebreaks, but the 18 rating points he lost was costly.

Fabiano Caruana fared much better and looked to be on his way to winning the tournament and taking over second place in the world rankings. But the final round encounter between Nakamura and Caruana changed everything, both in the tournament and in the world rankings.

In the video we discuss where Caruana lost his way and Nakamura took over.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
