Game of the Week #564

Last week it looked like the World Championship match between Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren was going to be a fairly one-sided affair, but the real drama had only yet to come.

After drawing the third game, both players kept winning their games with White, resulting in a 4-3 score in Nepo's favour halfway the match. How Ding Liren selfdestructed from a comfortable position in game 7 was painful to watch.

Anyway, after Nepo's win in game 2 last week, we will now study Ding's win in game 6.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
