Game of the Week #553

In the past two weeks we studied how Giri and Abdusattorov both managed to beat World Champion Magnus Carlsen at the tournament in Wijk.

Going into the final round of Wijk, it was still Abdusattorov in the lead, with Giri half a point behind. What the local chess fans were hoping for happened: Jorden van Foreest, who won the event himself two years ago, helped his fellow countryman by stopping the tournament leader and as our Game of the Week we will see how Giri managed to beat Rapport and win the tournament.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
