The end of the year is always a lovely time for chess fans, who are spoiled with the World Rapid and Blitz Championship. Since Magnus Carlsen will lose his title in classical chess, this event has become even more important to him and so far he is on track.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands the national championship is played in an interesting knock-out format. From the quarterfinals we will study the very instructive strategical masterpiece by Erwin L'Ami versus Sergey Tiviakov.
