Game of the Week #535

The Julius Baer Generation Cup was convincingly won by Magnus Carlsen. He won the preliminaries with a big margin, despite the fact that he resigned his game against Niemann after two moves. In the KO stage the world champion won equally convincing, peaking in the final against Erigaisi, in which Carlsen had a score of 4.5-0.5. We will examine the first game of this final as our Game of the Week.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
