Game of the Week #534

While I'm coaching at the World Cadets Championships in Batumi, Georgia, my friend Max Warmerdam once more pointed out which game I should take as our Game of the Week. It is not from the Julius Baer Generation Cup, where the Carlsen-Niemann story continues, but a beautiful game from the Spanish League. Rising superstar Gukesh, now 16 years old and number 18 in the world, beat Gawain Jones in a lovely game.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

Gukesh - G. Jones, Spanish League 2022
Position after 23...Bc8

This week’s show

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
