Game of the Week #519

Local hero and World Champion Magnus Carlsen is leading the standings table at the Norway Chess Tournament. With two rounds to go, he is just ahead of Anand, the former World Champion who is in excellent shape himself. In fact, in their direct encounter, Anand was outplaying Carlsen, but the latter escaped in the end.

As our Game of the Week, we have selected Carlsen’s win with white against Mamedyarov, which was played in his trademark technical style.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
