5/6/2026 – Javokhir Sindarov (20) and Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (14) were drawing attention in recent weeks, but also very cool is the comeback of chess legend Ding Liren (33) this week. He scored a solid three wins and two draws from five games in the Chinese League. While the Scotch Four Knights is a notoriously drawish opening, Ding played very patiently with Black against the young 2500 player Huang Renjie and showed that eventually winning chances may still arise in the endgame. 5/4/2026 – The Candidates has delivered a spectacular winner with 20-year-old Javokhir Sindarov, but just as spectacular is the rise of 14-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus. In part 3 of the Clash of Generation matches Erdogmus crushed the legendary Veselin Topalov with 5-1. In fact most games were quite close and tense affairs, but Erdogmus was tactically more accurate, even when he had to navigate through complex positions living from increment only. 4/16/2026 – The Candidates is over and eventually turned into a one man show: Javokhir Sindarov did what Veselin Topalov did back in the day: completely dominating the first half of the event by virtually winning everything and then convincingly staying out of trouble in the second half. Our Game of the Week is the sixth (!) win that Sindarov scored, in the tenth round, with the white pieces against Praggnanandhaa. 60m The Two Knights

This entry into the 60 minutes series concentrates on the Modern variation of the Italian game where White opens the centre early : 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Nf6 4 d4 exd4 5 e5!. This line can be reached by various move orders, most frequently from the Scotch 3 d4 exd4 4 Bc4. It's a sharp variation and Grandmasters such as Evgeny Sveshnikov have used it frequently,with very good results. It's a perfect line for club players to adopt which is relatively easy to learn and which contains many traps. All the main responses are covered here, including 5...d5, 5...Ng4 and 5...Ne4 and the conclusion is that is is difficult for Black to equalize in a straightforward way. Problems are being posed, which over the board might prove tough to solve.
