For the second time this year we have a monthly ratings update which is out of date the moment it's published. In February it was Gibraltar that was missing, but that was expected since the final round was played on January 31st, the same day the February list came out (FIDE generally publishes the monthly list on the final day of the previous month unless there are technical issues or exceptional circumstances). Evidently the policy is to that the cut off date is three days before the end of each month. But the Grenke Chess Classic was over on Monday, April 29th, roughly 24 hours before the May list came out. Even so, it's disappointing that these results — which were quite consequential to several of the top players ratings — are omitted from the update.

Chief among those affected is World Champion Magnus Carlsen, who is currently 2875.2 on the live rating list, but 'only' 2861 on the offical May list from FIDE. His latest triumph naturally stoked fresh speculation debates about whether he can lay claim to being the greatest player in chess history.
Kasparov (10, 1999/2002) is a target for this @MagnusCarlsen https://t.co/pD67AXgeAd most consecutive victories in super tournaments: Linares 4 (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, Wijk aan Zee 3 (1999, 2000, 2001), Sarajevo 2 (1999, 2000) and Astana 1 (2001).

An active playing schedule for the top five players nevertheless did not change their rankings one bit, and among the top ten only Vachier-Lagrave, Anand and Nepomniachtchi moved, playing a proverbial round of musical chairs, with each still finding a seat.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen had the greatest rating gain on the month, and that despite the Grenke Chess Classic not being included. Close on his heels is Hikaru Nakamura whose U.S. Championship win propelled him up 15 points and five places on the ranking list.
Leinier Dominguez's return to the chess board at the U.S. Championship led to a gain of 11 Elo points to 2750. (He is omitted from the list below on a technicality — FIDE publishes month-to-month comparisons, and Dominguez has been absent due to inactivity.)
On the losing side, Vladimir Fedoseev shed 19 Elo points to crash out of the 2700 club.

Comparison of the players old and new world rank after rating changes >/= 10 Elo points
The next World Championship Candidates tournament for women begins in four week's time to determine the challenger for Ju Wenjun. Former champion Mariya Muzychuk (pictured) will arrive in Kazan as the marginal top seed ahead of Kateryna Lagno.
Of the remaining top players rated over 2500, only Viktorija Cmilyte, Humpy Koneru and Lei Tingjlie will be absent from the Candidates as they did not qualify. Incidentally, Cmilyte is a member of the Lithuanian parliament, but rejoined the active list last month thanks to two games played in March in the German League.
At the other end of the list, U.S. Champion Jennifer Yu rejoins the Top 100 list, coming in at #97 with her new Elo of 2369. She hit the top list in the Spring of 2018, but then lost 100 Elo points from April to September of last year.

There was very little action in either the rapid or blitz ratings this month, so we'll skip it.
Alireza Firouzja reclaimed the #2 spot among the Juniors from Jeffrey Xiong after a very active month of April for the Iranian. He picked up 13 more Elo points despite losing to a 1900-player after forfeiting a game at the Grenke Open.
Gukesh is the only Junior on the current list who was born in 2006. He was among several Juniors who managed to fit in 27 rated games in April, but he also found time to spend a few days at the ChessBase offices.
