Chess Olympiad: Fan Anthem

by ChessBase
9/10/2024 – The Chess Olympiad is inspiring even before it begins. Jan Matthies, normally an IT expert but also a chess and music lover, wondered if AI was capable of creating a modern chess song. Yes, it is. His experiments have resulted in a chess rap: The Fan Anthem: "Checkmate Dreams".

Jan Mathies is an IT consultant, requirements engineer and proposal manager. And a big chess fan. He learned to play chess from his father at the age of six. By the time he was nine, he had beaten his father, but after that he only played as a hobby. Recently, however, he discovered a chess learning programme for mobile phones and is now hooked on chess again. He has also already made online acquaintances with other chess enthusiasts who, like him, want to improve as hobby players.

His second passion is music. Jan Mathies also started playing the piano at the age of six. Through music he met jazz musician Alan Broadbent, a two-time Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist, composer, arranger and conductor, whom Jan Mathies assisted for a time as his manager.

As an IT specialist, Jan Matthies was also interested in the possibilities of AI in music and conducted some experiments. With the help of the AI programme Suno the following rap song was created, including lyrics. When he contacted the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Jan Matthies was also sent the Chess Olympiad logo with permission to use it in his video.
