Indian grandmaster Humpy Koneru has withdrawn from the 2026 FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament, which is due to be held in Cyprus from 29 March to 16 April. Her decision was confirmed in an official communication, prompting organisers to implement the relevant provisions of the tournament regulations in order to fill the vacant spot.
Under Article 2.2 of the regulations, the invitation was extended to the next highest finisher in the Women's Events Series 2024–25 who had not already qualified. Ukrainian grandmaster Anna Muzychuk has consequently been named as Koneru's replacement.
Tournament officials have also clarified that the overall pairing structure will remain unchanged. The incoming participant will assume the withdrawn player's position in the draw, with the Chief Arbiter set to update the schedule and pairings.
In a brief personal statement, Koneru explained that she had reached her decision after careful consideration. She cited concerns relating to personal safety and well-being, noting that she did not feel sufficiently secure under the prevailing circumstances despite reassurances from the organisers. She described the withdrawal as both difficult and necessary.
After deep reflection, I have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament.

Her concerns come against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent military developments involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The security environment in parts of the Eastern Mediterranean has also drawn attention, including reports earlier in the month of a drone incident affecting a United Kingdom military installation on Cyprus' southern coast. Although the episode resulted in only minor damage and no casualties, it contributed to broader unease regarding regional stability.
Travel considerations have likewise been affected. The United States Department of State has issued a Level 3 advisory urging travellers to reconsider visits to Cyprus, while disruptions to air travel in neighbouring regions have led to flight cancellations and increased ticket prices on certain routes.
Koneru remains the only confirmed participant to have publicly raised safety reservations ahead of the tournament.
At one stage, an alternative proposal was put forward by Wadim Rosenstein, chairman of the WR Group and organiser of WR Chess events, who indicated that his organisation would be willing to host the Candidates in Germany and cover associated costs if required. Nevertheless, the competition is expected to proceed in Cyprus as originally planned.
