Grandmaster Triathlon

Despite all the turbulence, there is a constant in the Biel summer: the Biel International Chess Festival is opening its doors for the 55th time in an uninterrupted series. Over two weeks, hundreds of chess enthusiasts from all over the world compete in the Swiss town.

In the main event, eight top-100 players meet in the grandmaster tournament, including the three current best U18 players in the world.

In the Grandmaster Triathlon, the eight participants play classical, rapid and blitz chess. Le Quang Liem was the top scorer in the rapid section, while Gata Kamsky prevailed in Sunday’s blitz tournament.

  • Classical - 100 minutes for the first 40 moves + 50 minutes for the next 20 moves + 15 minutes for the rest of the game + 30-second increments per move (win: 4 points, draw: 1½ points)
  • Rapid - 15 minutes + 5-second increments per move (win: 2 points, draw: 1 point)
  • Blitz - 3 minutes + 2-second increments per move (win: 1 points, draw: ½ point)
