Basic rules of attacking play with Dr. Karsten Mueller

by Arne Kaehler
2/28/2023 – Karsten Mueller released a brand new Fritztrainer a few weeks ago. For once, however, it's not about fabulous endgames, but about the basic rules of attacking play. In the interview with the German grandmaster, we see how wonderfully a good attack can be completed with the help of two examples.

Most players prefer to attack rather than defend. But what is the correct way to do it? GM Dr Karsten Müller has compiled many rules and motifs to guide you, along with sharpening your intuition for the exceptions.

Interview with Dr. Karsten Mueller

on his latest Fritztrainer: Attacking correctly - rules of thumb for practice

What many people might not be aware of is that the endgame aficionado, as he outlines in his Four Player Types Model Fritztrainer with Luis Engel, is a skilled "activist."

Playing styles in chess are an important and thus often discussed topic. GM Dr. Karsten Müller and GM Luis Engel take up a model by GM Lars Bo Hansen based on 4 player types - namely ‘activists’, ‘pragmatics’, ‘theoreticians’ and so-called ‘reflectors’.

Dr. Karsten Mueller loves attacking on the chessboard and gives us a little insight into his Fritztrainer in this interview:

Most players prefer to attack rather than defend. But what is the correct way to do it? GM Dr Karsten Müller has compiled many rules and motifs to guide you, along with sharpening your intuition for the exceptions.

Alle Figuren in den Angriff 17.d5‼ Der Isolani wird in typischer Weise als Rammbock eingesetzt, um Zugstraßen für die weißen Figuren zu öffnen. cxd5?! 17...Kf7 war immer noch angezeigt. Der weiße Angriff ist nun aber schon sehr stark: 18.dxc6 bxc6 19.Red1 19.Qc4+!? Qd5 20.Qg4 ist ebenfalls gefährlich. 19...Qe6 20.Qxe6+ Kxe6 21.Nd4+ Kf7 22.Nxc6 (Kasparov) und Weiß hat gute praktische Gewinnchancen. 18.Nd4 Kf7 19.Ne6 Rhc8?! das läuft in eine wunderschöne Widerlegung. Schwarz ist allerdings ohnehin nicht mehr zu retten, z.B. 19...Nc6 20.Nc5 Qd6 21.Nxb7 Qd7 22.Nc5 Qd6 23.Qh5+ g6 24.Qh4 Ne5 25.f4 Nc4 26.b4 f5 27.Re6 Qd8 28.Qh6 Nd6 29.h4 Ne4 30.h5 Nxc5 31.hxg6+ Kxe6 32.Rxc5+- 20.Qg4 g6 21.Ng5+ Ke8 22.Rxe7+‼ Der fliegende Turm startet sein Reise mit einem Raketenstart. 22.Nxh7? Rxc1 23.Nxf6+ Kf7 24.Rxc1 Qe6 verkauft den weißen Vorteil dagegen viel zu billig. 22...Kf8 22...Qxe7 23.Rxc8++- 22...Kxe7 23.Re1+ Kd6 23...Kd8 24.Ne6+ Ke8 25.Nc5++- 24.Qb4+ Rc5 24...Kc7 25.Ne6+ Kb8 26.Qf4+ Rc7 27.Nxc7+- 25.Re6+ Qxe6 26.Nxe6+- 23.Rf7+! Kg8 24.Rg7+‼
