Winning starts with what you know
The new version 18 offers completely new possibilities for chess training and analysis: playing style analysis, search for strategic themes, access to 6 billion Lichess games, player preparation by matching Lichess games, download Chess.com games with built-in API, built-in cloud engine and much more.
The concept of achievements is well-known from other computer games, where special accomplishments in the game are virtually rewarded. In Fritz 19, you can now earn such achievements while playing. What's special about them is that they all have a chess-related significance and describe what's happening on the board. Examples include Attack a minor piece, Block a passed pawn, or Knight outpost. There are a total of 136 different achievements! Simple ones are Capture or Check. But there are also more challenging terms like Trap the queen, Opponent has an unsafe king, or Rook sacrifice. Whenever one of these events is recognized in your game, the program counts it. If you bring a specific event like Promotion onto the board often enough, you receive the corresponding achievement. For complex achievements, it's enough if the event happens once. More trivial ones like Castle kingside need to be recognized ten times to score points.
Achievements pop up at the bottom right of your windows desktop.
If you miss an achievement notification in the midst of an exciting game, you can always look them up later:
All Fritz 19 achievements are registered as Windows 11 notifications.
Achievements exist in three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Bronze is awarded for achieving the specified chess event one to ten times, depending on its rarity. Silver requires a hundred occurrences for simpler events like Evading an attack, but only twenty for more complex themes. The pinnacle is Gold. This is awarded for a thousand checks or a hundred underpromotions. As you can see, it requires some perseverance. However, it doesn't matter whether you win or how strong the opponent you have set in Fritz 19 is.
You can view your earned achievements at any time: Fritz 19 features an Achievement List function. You need a ChessBase account to score achievements.

You can also directly visit account.chessbase.com/de/myachievements.
If an achievement appears gray on this page, it means you haven't yet counted any events towards it. The precursor to Bronze (counted but not enough) is marked with a black frame. Then follow the colors Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Below the symbol, the current count and the threshold for the next level are displayed. By the way, if you click on an achievement, you can see the leaderboard of other users. Who has doubled rooks on an open file most often? Who has been in a winning position the most?
The leaderboards reward with honor, but there are also tangible awards: Each Bronze achievement counts one point, each Silver achievement five points, and each Gold achievement ten points. For every ten points completed, you receive an attractive digital trading card on our new site ChessBase Cards
My test game for this article yielded a trading card.
There's also a market where you can exchange cards or trade them for ducats. More on this in a later article here.
