Oro Can Catch Anton Guijarro in Their Direct Encounter
David Anton Guijarro leads by one point, while defending champion Faustino Oro has fallen clearly behind after suffering his first defeat on day four of the second “Leyendas y Prodigios” tournament in Madrid. But today he has the chance to make up the deficit himself. To do so, however, the twelve-year-old will have to beat the so far convincing Anton Guijarro with Black.

Convincing Tournament Leader
On Thursday morning, Anton Guijarro had no trouble holding a draw with White against Cuenca Jiminez in a Queen's Gambit. The leader maintained the initiative throughout, but Black defended well enough, and the game eventually reached an uneventful endgame with knight against bishop and five pawns on each side. The players agreed to a draw on move 59.
At the same time, Oro faced his compatriot and teammate for the Chess Olympiad, which begins next week. The prodigy had won their first-round encounter, and the Argentine record champion was apparently determined to avenge that defeat. He succeeded, although Oro had actually emerged from the opening with a good position:
In round seven, the leader had no trouble drawing with Black against Martinez Alcantara in an Italian Game. After an early exchange of queens, the players agreed to a draw on move 19. The Mexican thus remains 1½ points behind the Spaniard.
Oro recovered well from his morning defeat. In a French Defence, he took control and by move 22 was clearly better, with his kingside attack looking dangerous. However, he immediately gave up most of his advantage, and by move 30 Cuenca Jiminez had almost equalised. Despite being a pawn down, he defended carefully, and the game ended in a draw on move 47.
