Game of the Week #628
Jorden van Foreest is playing a few tournaments in Canada, and this week he won the Canadian Open with a remarkable 8½ out of 9 score.
In the seventh round, Toms Kantans almost beat Van Foreest, but he let him escape with a draw. Our Game of the Week is the fifth-round encounter between Victor Mikhalevski and Van Foreest. After a long theoretical line the position was dynamically balanced, but the nature of Black's compensation was very abstract - and therefore is interesting to study.
Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?
V. Mikhalevski - J. van Foreest, Canadian Open 2024
This week’s show
In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
