Game of the Week #590

After a difficult period in his career, Fabiano Caruana seems to be back on track. He won the USA Championship with an impressive 8 out of 11, five wins and six draws, finishing 1.5 points ahead of So, Dominguez and rising star Mishra.

This brings Caruana to 2795 in the live rankings, a clear number two behind Carlsen and close to 2800 again. As our game of the week we have chosen the battle from round nine against Niemann, which was a truly complex Italian game.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
