Game of the Week #584

There was a lot of rapid chess going on this week with Tata Steel India, the Julius Baer Generation Cup and the World Rapid Team Championship. Too much to choose from, but in the end it was the fascinating game of Duda-Gukesh that caught our attention.

Gukesh was having a good tournament, but he ran into trouble against the number three in the world rapid rankings. The middlegame, which followed a trendy opening variation, proved very tricky for both sides.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
