Game of the Week #511

The finish of the Reykjavik Open was a real thriller, with many players fighting for first place. Just when it seemed that several would share first place, Praggnanandhaa turned a lost position against Gukesh around to reach 7.5 out of 9 and to become sole first.

In the penultimate round against Cornette Praggnanandhaa already provided fireworks, adopting a recent attacking concept which Aronian used to beat Esipenko in the Grand Prix in Berlin. Praggnanandhaa vs Cornette is the game that we will study.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
