Melody Amber rapid and blindfold tournament

3/21/2006 – This traditional and very unusual tournament is being held for the 15th time, from March 18 to 30, in Monte Carlo, in Monaco. The players are of the highest calibre and include Topalov, Anand, Svidler, Aronian, Leko and Ivanchuk. They play two-game mini-matches against each other, one game of rapid chess, the other blindfold. Total prize sum is €216,000. Round three report.

Kasparov's aide badly beaten in Moscow

3/21/2006 – Marina Litvinovich, aide to Russian opposition politician Garry Kasparov and a former head of the electoral headquarters of the liberal SPS party, was badly beaten on a Moscow street on Monday evening. Litvinovich was hit over the head from behind as she was leavind her office. This is not the first attack on United Civil Front activists.

Two Russians in, two Georgians out

3/20/2006 – The women's world championship has traditionally been a battle between the Russians and Georgians, which the latter normally tended to win. In the quarterfinals in Ekaterinburg the remaining players from Georgia, Chiburdanidze and Khurtsidze, were eliminated, while Russians Galliamova and Matveeva went through. Malta vs Curaçao – a big step forward

3/19/2006 – A week ago the islands Curaçao and Malta, separated by 8,600 km of ocean, played a chess match against each other (Curaçao also against the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands). The whole event was conducted on the Internet, using the Playchess server. Thus, say the organisers, begins an interesting new era in competitive chess.

Ratmir Kholmov passes at 80

3/17/2006 – He was not well known in the West, but as a dangerous attacking player Ratmir Kholmov was able to embarrass generations of world champions, beating amongst others Keres, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Fischer and Kasparov. He was also known as the "central defender" for his defensive skills. Now he has passed at 80. We bring you his last interview.

Playing against a world champion

3/16/2006 – "It was like a wonderful dream," says Sarah Saggiante, who got a chance to play in a simultaneous exhibition given by FIDE World Champion Veselin Topalov in Mexico City. Kosteniuk out, three Russians left

3/16/2006 – Of the 13 top ranked players 11 have been eliminated after just three rounds of the Women's World Chess Championship in Ekaterinburg. Only the fourth and fifth seeds, Maia Chiburdanidze and Xu Yuhua remain in the competition. Today saw high drama, some of it brought on by pure fatigue. Even poor Moxi is confused.

Favourites falter in Ekaterinburg

3/15/2006 – Round one saw some high-ranking players knocked out, after round two we can bid goodbye to the world's two highest ranking females (after Judit Polgar) and the reigning women's world champion. Who is Mihail Marin?

3/14/2006 – The inside crowd knows the answer, but for many casual visitors the Romanian grandmaster came as a surprise, albeit a very pleasant one, when he started to annotate the games from the Super-GM in Morelia/Linares. Praise poured in, coupled with the request for more information on this masterful commentator, who has now won a book-of-the-year award.

Alexander Onischuk, Anna Zatonskih US Championships

3/13/2006 – In the final game in Group A he narrowly avoided defeat at the hands of the 2005 US Champions, 18-year-old Hikaru Nakamura. In the Championship match Ukraine-born Alexander Onischuk, 30, defeated Group B winner Yury Shulman to take the title. In the women's section the title went to Anna Zatonskih. Illustrated report.

Favourites go through, while stars tumble

Fire in Hamburg – Shirov visits ChessBase

3/13/2006 – Alexei Shirov, born in Riga, Latvia, 36 years after Tal, seems to have inherited all of the uncompromising fighting spirit of that legendary chess genius. His books, Fire on Board I and II, document his remarkable career. Now Shirov has turned to the new media and has started to record training sessions in the ChessBase DVD format. Linares R14: Levon Aronian wins Morelia/Linares Super-GM

3/11/2006 – This prestigious event was won not by FIDE world champion Veselin Topalov, nor by the other favourites Svidler and Leko, but by 23-year-old Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian, who after all is number five in the world rankings. Aronian achieved this by beating Peter Leko with the black pieces in the final round. Full report with pictures, video and commentary.

Turkish Championship in historical Pendik

3/9/2006 – The town has remanents of dwellings from 5,000 BC. There are ancient Macedonian and Roman settlements. It was taken over by Turkey 1080 and the name changed from Pantikapeum to Pendik.
