Nizhniy Novgorod: China beats Russia 52.5-47.5

8/31/2007 – The Russian men were in the lead for quite a long stretch, but in the last three rounds things went badly astray. In the end the men had lost narrowly to China by a 24.5-25.5 score, and since the Chinese women had defeated their Russian counterparts by 27-23, it was the far-eastern team that took overall victory. Knights of the South Bronx – in Durban

8/30/2007 – David MacEnulty is an inner-city teacher whose work with children in New York inspired the Ted Danson film Knights of the South Bronx. For David chess is a set of mind skills that enables children to face challenges they will encounter in their lives. Recently he visited Durban in South Africa, where the Durban Metro Chess Academy is teaching children to Push Pawns, Not Drugs!

NH Tournament: Rising Stars lead Experienced Grandmasters at halftime

8/28/2007 – The young guys – Karjakin, Cheparinov, Smeets, Stellwagen and Negi – were doing well against the veterans – Beliavsky, Jussupow, Khalifman, Nokolic, Ljubojevic – until round five, when the older men struck back with a dashing 3½-1½ win. Still, at the end of the first half of the tournament the Rising Stars are leading 13.0-12.0. The return rounds begin on Tuesday. Illustrated report.

2007 Mexico World Championship starts in two weeks

8/28/2007 – Are you ready for it? On Wednesday, September 12th is the opening ceremony, on Thursday at 14:00h (2 p.m.) local time the first round. The event is a double round robin with eight players – Anand, Kramnik, Morozevich, Leko, Aronian, Svidler, Gelfand and Grischuk. Euwe Stimulans: Simutowe wins and completes GM norms

8/27/2007 – He is, we believe, the first sub-Saharan African to achieve this kind of success: 25-year-old Zambian IM Amon Simutowe won the GM tournament in Arnhem, a point ahead of the field, without loss and with a 2687 performance, completing his final GM norm in the process. Congratulations Amon. We celebrate this triumph with a beautiful pictorial by Fred Lucas.

16-year-old Vachier-Lagrave new French Champion

8/27/2007 – Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, born 1990, was one of the youngest chess grandmasters in history, completing his final grandmaster norm at the age of 14. Three years down the road Maxime has just won the French Championship, beating experienced GM Vladislav Tkachiev in the tiebreak. Women's Champion is Silvia Collas. Ilya Smirin wins Acropolis 2007

8/26/2007 – This international event is the biggest in Greece and took place for the 22nd time, with 82 players, including 19 GMs. It was won by Israeli GM Ilia Smirin with 7.0/9 and a 2748 performance. 8/23/2007 – The Fourth China vs Russia Chess Match is currently taking place from August 18th - 31st, 2007, in Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia. After three rounds the Chinese men and women's teams are leading by a clear margin. The web site of the Russian Chess Federation is covering the event, in Russian and with something seldom seen in such reports: a nice dash of humour.

Chess: the ultimate invisible game

8/23/2007 – Chess is mostly an invisible game, in which the spectator sees very little happening. But that, of course, is only the tip of the iceberg. The overwhelming part of activity lies underneath the surface. This can be felt when you try to visualize a game without a board or pieces. Christian Hesse, a professor for mathematics, shows us a brilliant example and gives us a task in blindfold chess.

Bobby Fischer – the man with the clean-cut strategic style

Yet our Playchess trainer Dennis Monokroussos prefers to classify him as more of a "positional" player, closer to Capablanca, Smyslov or Karpov than Alekhine, Tal or Kasparov. Mainz 2007 – Navara wins the Ordix Open

8/21/2007 – With 762 players it is one of the biggest Rapid Chess Opens in the world. You will find a GM on place 188 in the final standings. At the top, after a long, nerve-wracking fight, was Czech Champion David Navara, who survived the final strech Indian onslaught of Harikrishna and Sasikiran to win the Ordix Open with 9.5/11 points. Michael Adams wins the Staunton Memorial

8/21/2007 – As is only appropriate in a tournament dedicated to the memory one of England's greatest players, the Fifth Staunton Memorial in London ended in a victory for another British chess all time great, Mickey Adams. In the final round, he drew with Black against Ivan Sokolov to reach an untouchable 8.5/11. Sokolov finished a point behind. Illustrated report.

8/21/2007 – It starts tomorrow, with five highly talented young chess players pitted against five older and highly experienced colleagues. Mainz 2007 – Anand wins Rapid Final

8/20/2007 – Vishy Anand won the Grenke Leasing Rapid World Championship, defeating Levon Aronian in the last game of their four-game match. Rustam Kasimdzhanov and Etienne Bacrot drew their match for third place, with each player winning one game. The Ordix Open was won by David Navara. Mainz 2007 – Anand and Aronian in the Rapid Final

8/19/2007 – Rustam Kasimdzhanov made a brave effort to catch Levon Aronian in the preliminaries of the Rapid Chess Championship in Mainz, but in the end the Armenian held fast to qualify for the Sunday evening encounter, where he meets with Vishy Anand. Viktor Korchnoi wins Banja Luka 2007

8/17/2007 – Many years ago – in 1979 to be precise – the Soviet Chess Federation sent a 16-year-old boy to play in this world-class event, thinking it was a youth tournament. The unrated lad went, saw and conquered, setting the tone for a world championship career. This year's tournament was won by the oldest player in its history. While Korchnoi took the points, the younger GMs went rafting.
