And today he did exactly that. A slip from Anand allowed Carlsen to snatch a "poisoned pawn", but precise calculation allowed him to keep it and put the pressure on. In game four, Magnus Carlsen played his pet Berlin and it was a resounding success as Vishy Anand floundered and then lost a pawn. The story was a repeat of game three, with Black sporting a large advantage, pressing to win, but unable to deliver the killing blow. Despite Carlsen’s efforts, Anand saved the game. Learning the Neo-London with Henrik Danielsen

11/13/2013 – Recently John Hartmann decided to rework his repertoire with the help of a new ChessBase "60 minute" video in which Icelandic GM Henrik Danielsen sketches a system for White after 1.d4 d5. His fundamental premise is that it is advantageous to play 2.Bf4, thereby delaying Nf3 – an approach called the "Neo-London". Hartmann describes what he learnt and how it influenced his tournament results.

In round two, a bold picture circulated on Twitter of four beautiful young girls showing their support for Magnus Carlsen. The Women's Polish Team gave the locals something to celebrate as they were able to beat Armenia and are now leading the tournament with Ukraine. 11/9/2013 – It was an almost anti-climactic start for the world championship. Carlsen was white in game one and chose an offbeat double fianchetto to face Anand’s Gruenfeld. No doubt he was hoping for a war of attrition to outplay the champion, but instead found himself forced to accept a draw by repetition in 16 moves. 11/9/2013 – The European Team Chess Championship has started in Warsaw and the tournament saw very few surprises in the first round. Bulgaria was able to take half a point from Armenia in the Open, while Sweden did the same with Azerbaijan, but the real loser of today's round was the Netherlands as both of its teams lost. Brazilian Championship: democracy restored

11/8/2013 – In a structure that is used in many countries still, Brazil restructured the national championship to reduce the number of automatic seeds, while requiring all others to fight for their chance, even the country's top player. WCh Chennai: Opening Ceremony

11/8/2013 – Thursday was the grand opening ceremony of the 2013 FIDE World Championship, held in the massive Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, with 6000 visitors in attendance. It was a festive affair, with competitive presentations by Indian and Norwegian performers. The drawing of lots gave Magnus Carlsen white in the first game on Saturday.
