Daniel King: New ideas in the Najdorf

1/24/2014 – According to Glenn Mitchell "Daniel King’s presentation doesn’t involve too much theory but instead remains focused like a laser beam on understanding the strategies involved for Black." He had watched Power Play 18 back in 2012 when it was released, and New Ideas in the Najdorf was a welcome refresher for many of the strategic themes covered in the earlier DVD. Review.

Tata 09: Aronian takes 1.5 point lead

1/23/2014 – What do you do when your nearest rivals close in on you? You beat them off with.... a b-pawn. That is what Levon Aronian did to Sergey Karjakin, and with no other managing to keep pace, he has opened a 1.5 point lead with two rounds to go. Other results were Harikrishna's win over Naiditsch, and So beating Van Wely in a King's Indian. Four players are tied with 5.5/9. Illustrated report.

Gupta wins Parsvnath GM Open in Delhi

1/23/2014 – The 12th edition of this giant event, with a total prize fund of Rs. 2.3 million ($37,000 or €27,000) plus laptop prizes, attracted 1396 players from 15 countries, including 22 GMs and 24 IMs, setting an Indian record for highest number of participants. The tournament was won by Indian GM Abhijeet Gupta, who had just returned from winning the Al Ain Classic the week before. Big illustrated report.

Carlsen @ Google

1/23/2014 – On January 16, while visiting California, Magnus Carlsen stopped over at the Google headquarters, where he gave a simul to ten lucky participants, and a chat with Art Levinson, CEO of Calico, a new Google company. Freeman Ng, one of the players, provided a report, with the generous contributions of other players and attendees, who sent their commented games and pictures.

Tata 10 (Group B): Close Race

1/22/2014 – The close race in the Challenger's group of Tata Steel intensifies as Jobava has regained the lead position, tied with Saric. Only half a point behind is the veteran Timman, and only half a point behind him is the rising star Muzychuk. Will Jobava keep playing his reckless chess, as he did today against Bok, to try to snatch the qualification spot to the Master's?

Baseline Chess, Hedgehog and Magnus Carlsen (2)

1/22/2014 – In tennis some players do their damage mostly from the baseline – as Carlsen did on the chessboard against Anand in Game 9 of their match. In several chess defenses the attack from the baseline also applies, for example in the Hedgehog, an opening developed by Ljubomir Ljubojevic in the 1970s but was first played by Fritz Sämisch in 1922. 1/21/2014 – Nick Schilder from Nick and Simon was today's guest of honor in Tata Steel. His inspiration to the players was clear as the Master's group saw an impressive five decisive games, including two crushing checkmate attacks while the Challenger's group also saw many wins and a change in the leaderboard. Anand: will he, won't he? He will!

1/21/2014 – We recently informed you that former World Champion Viswanathan Anand appeared to be vacillating on a decision whether to play in the March Candidates Tournament for the next Championship cycle. At least that is the way the media portrayed it. Decision day was January 20, and today FIDE published the official list of participants, which is topped by Anand. Participants and regulations.

Kasparov and the (almost) Oman immortal

1/21/2014 – Garry Kasparov was recently in Muscat, Oman, at the personal invitation of Alawi Al Zawawi. He gave interviews and pushed for the creation of a chess federation in Oman, which is sadly lacking despite the enthusiasm demonstrated for the game. There he also promoted the royal game with a simul against nineteen players, in which one game stood out as a brilliancy.

"WOM" Christmas Mission in Madagascar

1/20/2014 – On a perfect Georgian winter day, drinking a cup of hot tea at home in Tbilisi, thinking how boring winter was, WGM Nina Mausuradze received an invitation to go on a promotional chess tour in Madagascar. She jumped on chance, and describes the trip, and how everyone got into the chess spirit, whether the hotel manager paying for classes for his employees to the passport control.

The remarkably talented Harmony Zhu

1/20/2014 – "Did you see the Canadian girl?" Garry Kasparov said to us. "Very impressive!". He was in Al Ain, paying a visit to the World Youth Championship, where a seven-year-old was dominating the under eight group. We check her out and found that Harmony Zhu is not just a great chess player. She is extremely talented in a completely different field – hint: nomen est omen... You will never guess!

Tata 07: Exchange Sacrifice, anyone?

1/19/2014 – As if the spirit of Petrosian had possessed the playing hall, today's round in the Master's section of Tata Steel saw no less than five boards in which one side had an extra exchange! Interestingly, only in one of games was the exchange converted into a win (Rapport 1-0 Harikrishna) while one was lost (Nakamura 0-1 Van Wely) and three games finished in interesting positional draws.

1/19/2014 – In this Fritztrainer GM Peter Heine Nielsen, second of both Carlsen and Anand, covers all lines in the Dragon other than the Yugoslav Attack. "Nielsen generally explains the nuances and the important differences that small changes of the position lead to," writed GM Hedinn Steingrimsson. 1/18/2014 – Levon Aronian continued his imperial romp, outclassing Wesley So to reach 5.0/6 and a 3013 performance, but the tale of the day was the amazing number of missed chances from all around. In Group A, Giri, Dominguez, Van Wely, and Harikrishna all had winning positions, yet failed to close. In Group B, both Saric and Muzychuk also had golden opportunities. Group A report.

Carlsen wins Silicon Valley

1/18/2014 – "Magnus Carlsen unleashed enough of his dry wit to keep his audience tittering or applauding," reports Forbes. The 23-year-old World Champion spent a week winning hearts and minds in the Californian computer mecca – giving Mark Zuckerberg a chess lesson, agreeing to chair a $5 million chess programme, and speaking to PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel in this one-hour video interview.

Aronian continues his steady pace and beat Naiditsch thanks to some mistakes by the German, while Dominguez ravaged Rapport, So blew Gelfand off the board, while Caruana and Giri won long endgames against Van Wely and Harikrishna. Kunte breaks the Indian simul record

1/17/2014 – He took on 155 players, almost all from a chess academy that is very popular in Mumbai. He played for eight and a half hours and walked twelve km. And in the course GM Abhijit Kunte scored a whooping 149 points out of 155, which amounts to a meritorious score of almost 96%. Mind you: two young students won their games. Mr. Facebook vs the World Champion

1/16/2014 – It was a bit of startling news to read that Mark Zuckerberg had booked a face-to-face with Magnus Carlsen. Indeed, the founder of the greatest social network of our time sought out the World Champion for a lesson in the royal game, but the timing is what makes one wonder. Tata 05 GroupB: Jobava unstoppable

1/16/2014 – With the clash of the 2700s being won by Jobava, the question of who can stop him in this tournament is a natural one. This is his fourth victory in a row. His two closest rivals, Muzychuk and Saric, are only half a point behind but will have to continue their winning streaks if they wish to catch up to what seems to be a crushing showing. His performance is currently over 2900.

Illingworth wins Australian Chess Championship

1/16/2014 – It is is the most prestigious event in Australian Chess, and was held this year Springvale, an outer suburbs of Melbourne. IM Max Illingworth, rated 2434, took the title with a score of 8/11. He did it by winning his final round game against wizz kid FM Anton Smirnov, at 2338 the strongest 12-year-old in the world. We have a big illustrated report from "down under", with great pictures and videos.

Tata 04: Rijksmuseum!

1/15/2014 – Today's games were played in the famous Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam, which has a collection of over a million objects going back to the thirteenth century. The round had three White wins, especially important is the victory by Aronian against Nakamura as this propels the Armenian to clear first. Beautiful pictorial report from Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
