Meeting Simon Williams

5/1/2018 – As we are privileged with so many interesting visitors and authors coming to the ChessBase office in Hamburg and frequenting our studio, we often try to grab them for a few quick questions to see how they are and what's new. This time it was GM Simon Williams who visited us in Hamburg in order to prepare two new FritzTrainer video series. Of course, he also took time out for an impromptu interview. | Photo: ChessBase

Paikidze is U.S. Women's Champion

5/1/2018 – In a nail-biting rapid and blitz playoff, Nazi Paikidze came from behind to take her second U.S. Women's Championship title. Annie Wang played brilliantly in the first rapid game, winning with the White pieces in fine style. But Paikidze kept her cool, and in the second rapid game in a must-win situation, she stunned Wang with a clutch win, and then took the sudden death 'Armageddon' game, and with it the Championship. | Photo: Lennart Ootes

Sam Shankland is the 2018 US Champion!

4/30/2018 – It was a fantastic final sprint as both Fabiano Caruana and Sam Shankland fought to win their games to deny each other the title. Sam Shankland won again, giving his rival Fabiano Caruana no chance to steal it, and thus became the 2018 US Champion with a near 2900 performance. Nazi Paikidze and Annie Wang finished tied and will decide the title in a playoff on Monday. Report and analysis by GM ALEX YERMOLINSKY | Photo: Lennart Ootes

The Bundesliga: World Champs and veterans

4/29/2018 – From Sunday through Tuesday, the German League's central finals takes place in Berlin. Solingen SG and the OSG Baden-Baden are fighting for first place. The unified Bundesliga has been around for 37 years, with the first season played in 1980 and 1981. At that time the Solingen SG won, after a tie against the team of SG Porz. There was a world champion among the participants. | Pictured: Boris Spassky, Chess Olympiad Thessaloniki 1984 | Photo: Gerhard Hund

Gashimov Memorial: Magnus Carlsen is third time winner

4/29/2018 – The writing was on the wall, and the last round clash between Magnus Carlsen and Ding Liren remained somewhat anticlimactic as they drew after just 27 moves. To be fair, Magnus never gave his opponent a chance to liven things up. The one decisive game of the last round was Sergey Karjakin’s win over Veselin Topalov. A great tournament victory for the World Champion with signs of what is to come. | Photo: Shamkir Chess

US Championship: Caruana keeps it close

4/29/2018 – Both Sam Shankland and Fabiano Caruana won crucial tenth round games. Caruana came out swinging with the black pieces, going for a Sicilian, while Shankland played the last placed but still dangerous Alexander Onischuk. ALEX YERMOLINSKY looks at the key games of the round. With one more to play Shankland is tantalizingly close to his first U.S. Championship victory, but Caruana remains close behind. Annie Wang easily drew with multi-time U.S. Women's Champ Anna Zatonskih and remains a half point up on Nazi Paikidze. But while Wang has black in the final round, Paikidze will have white against Rusa Goletiani, which should make for an exciting conclusion. | Photo: Lennart Ootes

Study of the Month: April, 2018

4/28/2018 – Chess is a wide field with many interconnections, and while preparing this month’s article about pawn endgame composer Nikolay Grigoriev, study expert and historian SIEGFRIED HORNECKER learned about a nearly forgotten chess organizer from the early Soviet Union, Valerian Eremeev. But also Alekhine’s five queen game might have influenced Grigoriev.

ACM: The Crown Jewel: WIM Annie Wang

4/28/2018 – At 15, Annie Wang is already a world champion. Last autumn, the California-born American girl took home the gold medal at the 2017 World Youth Chess Championship U16 girls with an impressive score of 10½ / 11, two and a half points ahead of the runner-up from Russia. Her performance rating? An incredible 2589 — practically that of a grandmaster. The rising star was the pride of the nation.

US Championship: Shankland and Wang sprinting to gold

4/28/2018 – On the surface, the round was a quiet one, with eleven draws out of the twelve games in both events, but things were not so simple. More than a few games seemed likely to leave a body behind, but this was not counting the defenders desire to not lose. Sam Shankland had a promising position against Fabiano Caruana with an extra pawn, but never quite built it up enough to win. Both Women’s leaders Nazi Paikidze and Annie Wang were dead lost in their games, but lived to fight another day. | Photo: Lennart Ootes

Shamkir Round 8: Carlsen or Ding

4/28/2018 – In today's penultimate round of the Gashimov Memorial in Shamkir, the dam has finally burst: Four of the five games were decided. Magnus Carlsen finally has a plus score against Anish Giri for the first time since their initial meeting in Wijk aan Zee, 2011, but Ding Liren won as well to keep pace, ahead of their crucial final round pairing. Magnus with white and a half point lead of course has excellent chances to win another title in Shamkir. | Photos: Shamkirchess / Eteri Kublashvili

US Championship: Eight decisive games in Round 8

4/27/2018 – Sam Shankland and Fabiano Caruana both drew and remain tied after a tumultuous round in St. Louis. Ray Robson and Alex Lenderman scored full points with Robson's win coming after 144 moves over Varuzhan Akobian. In the women's championship, a whopping six decisive games, including another win from Annie Wang who scored a big point against Irina Krush and retains her full point edge, with just three rounds to go. |Photos: Lennart Ootes

Keyboard shortcuts for ChessBase and Fritz

4/27/2018 – When working at a computer some people prefer to use the mouse while others like to keep their fingers on the keyboard. They steer the computer with keyboard shortcuts. ChessBase and Fritz have default shortcuts but you can also define shortcuts of your own. Here are a few hints! | Drawing: ChessBase

Shamkir Round 7: Carlsen in charge

4/27/2018 – Veselin Topalov has yielded the lead to Magnus Carlsen at the Vugar Gashimov Memorial. In their head-to-head encounter, Topalov gave up his queen for rook and bishop, but could not hold the game against the reinvigorated world champion. Ding Liren also came out on top against the floundering David Navara. Is Carlsen's success off the board foreshadowing a Norwegian win in Shamkir? GM Daniel Fernandez annotates all games of round seven. | Photos: ShamkirChess.az

Leela Chess Zero: AlphaZero for the PC

4/26/2018 – It might sound like a joke, but it is not: the revolutionary techniques used to create Alpha Zero, the famous AI chess program developed by DeepMind, are now being used to engineer an engine that runs on the PC. This project has now been underway for about two months, and the engine, Leela Chess Zero, is already quite strong, playing at 2700 on good hardware, and is freely available. As will be seen, just about every aspect of this new engine is revolutionary and breaks all the paradigms that had dominated the field until now.

US Championship: Caruana joins the lead

4/26/2018 – Leader Sam Shankland played a calm draw against Wesley So, in the seventh round of the US championship, and remains at the top, but he was joined by Fabiano Caruana who scored his fourth win, defeating Varuzhan Akobian. So, meanwhile, had time for some fun trash-talk, giving all the commentators a good time during the live-broadcast, don't miss it! In another surprise, the "favorites fright" Zviad Izoria defeated Hikaru Nakamura. Annie Wang won once again in the Women's and now has a full point edge. After round six, players were invited to a party dubbed "Chess After Dark", abd the next day they gave simultaneous exhibitons against local students. | Photos: Lennart Ootes
