Chessable Masters: Ding knocks out Carlsen, Pragg stuns Giri

5/25/2022 – Rating underdogs Ding Liren and Praggnanandhaa moved on to the finals of the Chessable Masters after knocking out Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri respectively. After drawing their first three encounters, Ding defeated Carlsen in game 4 to clinch match victory. Meanwhile, Pragg and Giri traded blows to take their match to tiebreaks. The 16-year-old Indian prodigy was stronger in blitz, and thus knocked out his famed opponent.

Sheripov announces his candidacy for FIDE President

5/24/2022 – On May 19, Inal Sheripov (Belgium) announced his intention to run for FIDE President. His ticket has already been officially submitted to the FIDE office, with supporting letters from the federations of Ukraine, Zambia, Sierra-Leone, Barbados, and Timor Leste. The ticket includes Lewis Ncube (Zambia), current President of the African Chess Confederation, as a Candidate for the position of FIDE Deputy President.

Two invitational tournaments in Hamburg

5/24/2022 – The Hamburger Schachklub von 1830 (HSK) is the largest and second oldest German chess club. It is also very active and currently organises two invitational tournaments in Hamburg: a GM tournament and an IM tournament, both featuring promising young players (pictured: Leon Mendonca) and experienced masters. The Polish star collected 6½/9 points on the final day of action to overcome long-time sole leader Vishy Anand in the standings table. Jan-Krzysztof Duda won the event after collecting 6½/9 points on the final day of action to overcome long-time sole leader Vishy Anand in the standings table. 5/23/2022 – The preliminary stage of the Chessable Masters came to an end on Sunday. Anish Giri scored a win and two draws to keep the lead and win the single round-robin. Magnus Carlsen finished in second place, and was followed by Ding Liren and Praggnanandhaa. Wei Yi, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, David Anton and Aryan Tari also made it to the knockout stage.

Wei Yi, who had been leading until Friday, only managed two draws and dropped to fourth place. Magnus Carlsen is one point behind Giri in second place; Ding Liren is third. Sunday’s final three rounds of the preliminaries will decide which eight players move on to the knockout.
