3/14/2023 – Positions with queen and piece against queen and piece have aspects that are typical for middlegames and aspects that are typical for the endgame. In the diagram position the white king is safe - a typical middlegame aspect - while the dangerous passed pawns - typical for endgames, are good for Black. The Ukrainian GM was defeated by Alexey Sarana, who thus climbed to sole first place in the standings. 3/12/2023 – The last day of play at the Armageddon Series Championship Series in Berlin again promises exciting blitz and frantic chess: Sam Shankland faces Andrew Tang to decide who will play Wesley So in the tournament’s final, which will take place right after that match is over. In both matches, two blitz games will be played; in case of a 1-1 tie, an Armageddon game will follow. Start: 19.00 CET. European Championship: Calculated risk

3/11/2023 – Anton Korobov continues to lead the standings at the European Championship in Serbia. Korobov signed an 8-move draw with white against Benjamin Gledura, who was in sole second place going into Friday’s eighth round. Gledura is now joined in second place by Alexey Sarana, who defeated Yuriy Kuzubov on board 4. Celebrating Bobby Fischer: A quiet win by a troubled genius

3/9/2023 – Today Bobby Fischer, who was born in Chicago on 9 March 1943 and died in Reykjavik on 17 January 2008, would have turned 80 years old. Fischer, world champion from 1972 to 1975, was a man full of contradictions and made headlines time and again — through his brilliant play, but also through his eccentric behaviour. Fischer’s long-time rival Bent Larsen once said: “You can’t understand Robert James Fischer. But why should you want to?
