A rejuvenated ‘First Saturday’

6/14/2023 – More than 30 years since its inception, ‘First Saturday’ is still going strong. Constantly reinventing itself, it has been kicking and running against all odds. Most of today’s top professionals have succumbed to the attraction of this ingenious concept that aims at providing chess players with the opportunity to earn norms and subsequently further their chess career. The model has been adopted by many organisers at various corners of the globe, but the credit for the original set up goes to Laszlo Nagy, known as Mr First Saturday.

10th Dhamso International Chess Festival in Sri Lanka

6/14/2023 – The 10th Dhamso International Chess Festival was held on May 26-30 at the Hotel Lavanga Resort & Spa in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka. In the main event, IM Mohan Kushara (pictured) won the championship by scoring 9/10 points, while R M Dulinma Hemalni Rathnayake won the women’s championship after scoring 7/10 points. More than 660 players competed in the event which included one GM, two IMs, one FM and three Arena FMs from four different countries: Azerbaijan, India, Russia and Sri Lanka.

Carlsen scores clutch win to qualify for Aimchess Rapid’s Division I

6/13/2023 – Magnus Carlsen suffered a shock defeat to long-time second GM Laurent Fressinet but roared back to secure qualification for Division I in the Champions Chess Tour’s upcoming Aimchess Rapid event. Joining Carlsen in the top tier will be Levon Aronian, Wesley So, and the Venezuelan-born Spanish Eduardo Iturrizaga who all progressed through a challenging Swiss event before winning their respective rapid matches against other top-eight finishers.

Cairns Cup: Alexandra Kosteniuk clinches second place

6/13/2023 – The ninth round of the Cairns Cup saw Alexandra Kosteniuk grabbing a third consecutive win to secure clear second place in the final standings. Kosteniuk defeated Elisabeth Paehtz with black, while Irina Krush, who was sharing second place with Kosteniuk before the final round, failed to get the better of tournament winner Anna Zatonskih in a tricky endgame. Armageddon in Berlin: Day 1 - Duda wins against Adams, Keymer beats Donchenko

6/13/2023 – The first day of the Europe and Africa Regional qualifier kicked off with a top match between British number one Michael Adams and Poland's top player Jan-Krzysztof Duda. After several ups and downs Duda won with a bit of luck. The second match of the day saw an all-German clash between Vincent Keymer and Alexander Donchenko, in which Keymer (pictured) was a bit more lucky and won.

Carlsen, Nepo and Ju Wenjun to play at the FIDE World Cup

6/13/2023 – The FIDE World Cup, a knock-out chess extravaganza held every two years, will celebrate its 10th edition in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 30 July to 24 August 2023. Many of the participants in the open and the women’s sections have confirmed their presence. Heading the open will be Magnus Carlsen, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Fabiano Caruana, while the women’s event will have Humpy Koneru, Ju Wenjun and Aleksandra Goryachkina as the top seeds. The fields will be completed before June 30.

Humpy Koneru, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Harika Dronavalli are the top seeds in the 10-player single round-robin with a classical time control. Alexandra Kosteniuk’s win over Bella Khotenashvili helped Zatonskih to grab clear first place. Remarkably, the tournament champion was the lowest-rated player in Saint Louis. Asnières wins French Team Championship in Chartres

6/12/2023 – The French Team Championship, also known as ‘Top 16’, was played on June 1-11 in Chartres, a small city not far from Paris. Before Sunday’s final round, three teams were tied at the top of the standings: Asnières, Bischwiller and Grasse. The final round saw Asnières and Bischwiller drawing their match, while Grasse lost to Chartres. Vidit and Raunak clinch Maharashtra Challenge Match

6/11/2023 – Vidit Gujrathi and Raunak Sadhwani won Maharashtra Challenge Match 2023. They both dominated their respective opponents, Peter Svidler and Nigel Short. Raunak won the match with six games and a day to spare, Vidit clinched it with four games left on the final day. Raunak dominated all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz. Cairns Cup: Krush and Khotenashvili grab crucial wins

6/11/2023 – In the seventh round of the Cairns Cup played on Saturday, sole leader Anna Zatonskih got a rest day. Elisabeth Paehtz missed her chance to catch up with Zatonskih, as the German grandmaster lost to Bella Khotenashvili. Thanks to this win, the Georgian now stands half a point behind Zatonskih. Nakamura beats Caruana to win Norway Chess 2023

6/10/2023 – A final-round win over long-time leader Fabiano Caruana gave Hikaru Nakamura outright victory at the 11th edition of the Norway Chess super-tournament. Nakamura scored three wins and no losses in his nine classical games, which allowed him to climb to the second spot in the live ratings list. 6/10/2023 – In the diagram position White has just played 32.Rxf6!, which gives him an advantage after both 32...gxf6 and the game continuation 32...Dc3. There's a lot more to the position than I initially thought, though - let's climb up the variation tree!

6/10/2023 – In the sixth round of the Cairns Cup played on Friday, Anna Zatonskih won her game with black against Gunay Mammadzada and now stands alone at the top of the standings with a 4½/6 score. Elisabeth Paehtz is in second place after beating Nana Dzagnidze with white to reach a 3½/6 score. Hikaru Nakamura lost to Nodirbek Abdusattorov in Armageddon, but still has a chance to win the tournament.
