7/9/2023 – Magnus Carlsen obtained a 3-point lead going into the final day of action at the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz tournament after scoring a magnificent 9 out of 9 in the first half of the blitz section. After beating all of his opponents, an elated Carlsen told Anastasiya Karlovich: “I’ve had good days, but of course, this is something special”. Women’s World Championship: Ju misses chance in game 3

7/8/2023 – In the third game of the FIDE Women’s World Championship on Saturday, defending champion Ju Wenjun, playing black, briefly got an edge, but it quickly evaporated. Challenger Lei Tingjie was able to regain a balanced position in which the draw could no longer be averted. All three games have ended drawn so far in Shanghai. 7/8/2023 – Ian Nepomniachtchi and Fabiano Caruana are tied in first place after nine rounds of rapid chess at the Grand Chess Tour in Zagreb. Former co-leader Vishy Anand failed to keep up with his colleagues, as he was defeated by Dommaraju Gukesh in their first-ever official confrontation. 7/7/2023 – The finish of the 6th game of the World Championship match between Ding Liren and Ian Nepomniachtchi was impressive. In a tense and complicated position, Ding surprisingly advanced his d-pawn, and this small pawn advance was crucial to a spectacular mate that could have occurred in the game. The audience was impressed, the study composers were inspired. 7/7/2023 – Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana and Vishy Anand are sharing the lead at the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz tournament after two days of play. Anand finished day 1 as the sole leader, and saw Nepo and Caruana catching up with him thanks to outstanding performances in rounds 4-6. The Short but Glorious Life of Edgard Colle (May 18, 1897 - April 19, 1932)

7/5/2023 – In the recent 2023 World Championship Match, Ding Liren won Game 12 against Ian Nepomniachtchi using the Colle System to tie the score at six. The match remained tied after fourteen games, and Ding went on to beat Nepomniachti in the rapid tie-breaks to become the 17th World Champion. With the Colle System utilized in the World Championship Match, it is a fitting moment to remember the life and career Edgard Colle.

Back in León: Gelfand to look for third straight victory in 4-player knockout

7/5/2023 – The 36th edition of the “Magistral Ciudad de León” will take place on July 6-10. Once again, a 4-player knockout will be the main attraction in the city located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Boris Gelfand will attempt to defend his title against Francisco Vallejo, Nikita Vitiugov and local star Jaime Santos. Gelfand defeated Vishy Anand in the final of last year’s edition.

Svitlana's Smart Moves - My Jobava-London win against an IM

7/4/2023 – Svitlana recently played in the Canadian Transnational Tournament, where almost every opponent had a couple of hundred rating points more than her. Awonder Liang, Lazaro Bruzon, and Alexandr Lenderman were among the players in the tournament. The WIM was still able to show some smart moves, and even beat an IM with the Jobava-London. And due to this opening choice, Svitlana started a nice attack, which had some beautiful tactics.

Tony Ballard and the Gift of Chess

7/4/2023 – Tony Ballard is a Kansas prison inmate who turned a 25-year sentence into a passion for chess. He used the game to teach other inmates critical-thinking skills, and became the Director of Prison Outreach. Tony partnered with The Gift of Chess, an initiative that is set to distribute one million chess sets all over the world by 2030. To date they have manufactured over 80,000, sending most to African nations. Read this report and prepare to be inspired.
