Extremely competitive European Team Championship to start in Budva

11/8/2023 – The 24th edition of the European Team Chess Championships will take place on November 11-20 at the Conference Hall of Hotel Splendid in Budva, Montenegro. An open championship and a women’s championship will be played concurrently, with each event a 9-round Swiss tournament. Led by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Teimour Radjabov, the Azerbaijani team heads the starting rank in the open. Endgame: Remembering Michael Gambon (1940-2023)

11/8/2023 – Michael Gambon, known to many film and Harry Potter fans as Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster in the Harry Potter films, died at the end of September at the age of 82. Originally a theatre actor, Michael Gambon became interested in chess after appearing in Samuel Beckett's "Endgame" and played regularly with Jason Kouchak during a joint film project. Jason Kouchak bids farewell with a song.

FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2023 to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan

11/8/2023 – Chris Ward couldn't resist showing us a wonderful game of Arjun Erigaisi, defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi with the Dragon. Apparently, Erigaisi is watching the Monthly Dragon, since he used the advice by Chris, of last month's episode! 11/7/2023 – Indian chess celebrated a double victory in the recent FIDE Grand Swiss events on the Isle of Man. Vidit Gujrathi and Vaishali Rameshbabu claimed outright victories in the open and the women’s sections respectively. Which line should Black adopt after 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Qxd5 3 Nc3? Here we focus on the sharp 3...Qd6 as opposed to 3...Qa5 or 3... Qd8. All the main responses aside from 3 Nc3 are shown in exemplary games and the result is an insightful overview for club players which will stand the test of time and not require too much burning of the midnight oil.

Indians prevail in FIDE Grand Swiss: Vidit and Vaishali triumph!

11/6/2023 – A clutch win — his seventh in ten games — gave Vidit Gujrathi tournament victory in the open section of the FIDE Grand Swiss. The Indian grandmaster thus qualified to the 2024 Candidates Tournament. Joining him in Toronto will be Hikaru Nakamura, who finished in clear second place a half point behind. Meanwhile, another Indian player prevailed in the women’s section, as Vaishali Rameshbabu grabbed clear first place after drawing Batkhuyag Munguntuul on Sunday. 11/5/2023 – Round 10 of the FIDE Grand Swiss saw decisive games on the seven top boards, with Hikaru Nakamura, Andrey Esipenko and Vidit Gujrathi scoring full points to go into the final round in shared first place. Nakamura got the better of Fabiano Caruana in the duel of top seeds, Vidit defeated Bogdan-Daniel Deac with the black pieces, while Esipenko beat Parham Maghsoodloo on board 3.
