7/25/2025 – During the FIDE World Cup, the FIDE Council held an online meeting and decided to allow a "neutral team" featuring Russian players to participate in the upcoming Women’s Team World Championship. The European Chess Union (ECU) issued a statement protesting this decision.
7/25/2025 – Oskemen has made a new entry into the international tournament calendar. In the largest city of East Kazakhstan, three open tournaments are currently taking place, including a Masters event featuring nearly 20 grandmasters competing for a substantial prize fund. Oskemen is notable not only for its strong chess field but also for its rich and complex history. Once known as Ust-Kamenogorsk, the city was an important center during the Soviet era and remains a cultural and industrial hub today.
7/23/2025 – Both semifinal matches at the Women's World Cup in Batumi ended in draws, leaving qualification for the final to be decided in Wednesday's second classical games. 7/22/2025 – In the only match that went to tiebreaks in the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup, Divya Deshmukh secured a 2–0 victory over her compatriot Harika Dronavalli, thus becoming the fourth player to advance to the semi-finals. 7/1/2025 – The Elo ratings were introduced by the World Chess Federation as the official system to rank players on 1 July 1971. Robert "Bobby" Fischer led the rankings by a huge margin a year before his memorable World Championship match. The rating formula was developed by mathematician and chess enthusiast Arpad Elo.
6/30/2025 – Armenian grandmaster Tigran Nalbandian passed away in Yerevan on Saturday. In his youth, he was one of Armenia's greatest talents, later enjoying success as a professional player and then as a coach. For a while, he worked on Vladimir Kramnik's coaching team. However, after filing a protest, the first round was replayed. WR Chess won the match and went on to triumph in the semi-finals.
