11/25/2024 – The number of opinions and evaluations of the two world championship title fighters has been legion, but have you ever wondered what world number one, Magnus Carlsen, really thinks of the play of both players? In a set of two short videos, he sits down with GM David Howell and rates each player on every aspect of play, from tactics and calculation, to opening preparation. Fascinating stuff!

You will find videos galore, even with Magnus Carlsen, on Gukesh and Ding, but all except these two date from either shortly after Gukesh's Candidates win, or before the monster rout in the Olympiad with a 3000+ Elo performance, probably the greatest Olympiad performance ever by a player. The videos have David Howell asking Magnus to rate the players on a scale of 1 to 100 on a variety of aspects of their games. There are fascinating small tidbits and comments that only a player of that caliber could make.
One of those insights can be seen in his comments on Ding Liren in which he describes a camp he had with the Chinese player and noted that it quickly became clear to him that Ding was a much better calculator than he was, though he was a better tactician than Ding.
Magnus Carlsen is careful to distinguish his thoughts on Ding during his heyday and Ding now
So what about Gukesh? Magnus is both generous and objective in his opinions. He does not consider Gukesh a real tactician, even if he brandishes solid tactical chops. On the flip side, he feels Gukesh's calculation abilities are unmatched, and even Ding, whom he judged to be clearly better than himself, could not compare to Gukesh in that realm. Not even when Ding was at his peak.
The big question now is how will all this translate to games and results?
