Game of the Week #654

The Tata Steel tournament in Wijk aan Zee will start on the weekend, but before we dive into that in the coming weeks, let's have a look how the Dutch fared in the German Bundesliga.

Max Warmerdam had a difficult weekend, including a tough loss with White against Magnus Carlsen, but Jorden van Foreest did much better.

Our game of the week is his creative handling of the Ruy Lopez against Danish Grandmaster Jonas Buhl Bjerre, leading to complete domination of the position.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

This week's show

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
