Game of the Week #653

Since the rapid game B. Jacobson vs H. Nakamura we discussed last week was quite impressive, we decided to select another game from the World Rapid Championship. The rapid time control obviously does not allow for the same level of accuracy as classical chess, but the games can still be very creative and extraordinary.

In the 12th round encounter between David Paravyan and Saleh Salem, White was strategically superior for most of the game, but eventually Black took over in most romantic fashion.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week's show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
