Game of the Week #652: B. Jacobson - H. Nakamura

by Merijn van Delft
1/6/2025 – Merijn van Delft starts the year with a provocation. In his first Game of the Week show of 2025, he presents a rapid game, in which White played 1.a4 against Hikaru Nakamura, the current world number 3. Despite his dubious opening, White won the game - in which his a-pawn made a remarkable career. | Merijn's show is available on-demand with a ChessBase Premium Account. Game of the Week #652

Happy new year everyone!

Last week we decided against picking a rapid game as our Game of the Week, but the game Brandon Jacobson versus Hikaru Nakamura from the World Rapid Championship was extraordinary - and White used some really cool concepts.

The game started with the provocative 1.a4, but after 1...e5 2.e4 it soon turned into known stuff with colours reversed. When Nakamura started hesitating with his counterplay, his young fellow countryman got the upper hand with very inspired play.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
