Game of the Week #642

After winning the US Championship 2024 Caruana is the world's number two again. With a new live-rating of 2805.2 he is narrowly ahead of Hikaru Nakamura who has a current rating of 2802.

Closely behind are Arjun Erigaisi and Gukesh, who are currently playing in the European Club Cup and are fast approaching 2800.

Crucial for Caruana's win of the US Championship 2024 was his victory with Black in round 3 against Ray Robson. As it is also a model game, it is our Game of the Week.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week's show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
