Game of the Week #635

The Sinquefield Cup was won impressively by Firouzja, as we saw last week, but Caruana's performance was equally impressive. At the moment only the top 3 in the world (Carlsen, Nakamura, Caruana) manage to maintain a rating advantage over the new generation of elite players.

In the last round of the Sinquefield Cup Caruana played against Anish Giri, and this is our game of the week. It illustrates that Caruana seems to be reinventing himself all the time, while Giri is finding it really hard to maintain his top level.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week's show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
