Game of the Week #627

Max Warmerdam is on fire. Two weeks ago we already looked at a game of his and noted that he is quickly approaching Jorden van Foreest in the world rankings. By beating Benjamin Bok in the semi-final of the (knock-out) Dutch championship, Max actually pushed his rating to 2671, which is exactly Jorden's rating.

Warmerdam-Bok is our Game of the Week, featuring a topical Italian variation, eventually resulting in a very instructive good knight vs bad bishop scenario.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
