Game of the Week #625

24-year-old Max Warmerdam was already ranked #3 in the Netherlands, but after his recent run of good form, he is now closing in on #2 Jorden van Foreest and is currently ranked #65 in the world. Max won the Teplice Open, catching up with tournament leader Jingyao Tin in the seventh round and beating former 2700 player Alexander Motylev in the final round. White's strategy and technique in Warmerdam-Motylev was instructive, making it our game of the week.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
