Game of the Week #592

The Grand Swiss is an amazing tournament to watch with so many top players fighting for two candidate spots and basically the entire field rated above 2600. After six out of eleven rounds there is a group of eight players leading with 4.5 out of 6.

One of the players who stands out is Javokhir Sindarov, 17 years old and about to break the 2700 barrier. The common theme in his three black games so far has been domination of the dark squares and we will study the most impressive of these against Sevian.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
