by Merijn van Delft
10/5/2023 – In his Game of the Week show #588, Merijn Van Delft looks at a fine attacking game, in which the Dutch International Master Stefan Kuipers punished double-edged opening play by French GM Christian Bauer. | Merijn’s show is available on-demand with a ChessBase Premium Account. In this Fritztrainer: “Attack like a Super GM” with Gukesh we touch upon all aspects of his play, with special emphasis on how you can become a better attacking player.

Game of the Week #588

My good friend Stefan Kuipers shared his game against experienced grandmaster Christian Bauer from the Belgian League with some revealing notes.

The opening was quite unusual and the decisions that both players had to make were not standard either. Once White got the upper hand, the game was played with an iron hand.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

S. Kuipers - C. Bauer, Belgian League 2023
Position after 14...Nxd4

This week’s show

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
