Game of the Week #580

While the World Championship is very exciting to follow and something we will certainly return to next week, the traditional summer tournaments also produce a lot of exciting fights.

It is something of a tradition to share my losses, and in Vlissingen against GM Liam Vrolijk I had a really exciting fight that definitely deserves to be shared. Any result was possible until everything was decided in the last minute.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
