Game of the Week #578

The tournament in Biel is a bit complicated to follow due to the innovative scoring system, but after checking the classical games, one of them clearly stood out both in terms of theoretical relevance and entertainment value: Arjun Erigaisi vs David Navara.

In a highly relevant variation of the Sicilian Najdorf, White entered a very critical line (no spoilers). In the ensuing battle, both sides were winning at some point!

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

A. Erigaisi - D. Navara, Biel 2023
Position after 20...Bc5

This week’s show

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
