Game of the Week #575

The Dutch Chess Federation is celebrating its 150th anniversary and to mark the occasion Anish Giri has decided to play the Dutch Championship for the first time in many years. Jorden van Foreest is also playing and the KO format guarantees a spectacular event.

So far, the piece sacrifice that Max Warmerdam prepared in the Zaitsev deserves mention, but our game of the week is the nasty piece of home preparation that Giri played in the Catalan against Benjamin Bok.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
