Game of the Week #549

World Champion Magnus Carlsen is going to lose his title in classical chess, but he managed to win both the World rapid and World blitz, so for now he holds all three titles. Combined with his consistently dominant position on the rating list, this cements his position as best player ever.

In the final round of the rapid championship against Parham Maghsoodloo he had to win and the way he delivered is impressive. The perfect combination of attack and defence resulted in a model game.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
