Game of the Week #531

This week I'm playing a tournament in Maia, which is a suburb of Porto, the beautiful city in Portugal. The tournament has a very nice vibe and is warmly recommended.

At the time of writing GM Omar Almeida Quintana from Cuba is leading the tournament with 6.5 out of 7, and is a full point ahead of the rest. In the fourth round I lost an instructive game against him, which I want to share with you.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
