Wilhelm Steinitz: A short tribute

5/18/2016 – 180 years ago, on 17th May 1836, Wilhelm Steinitz was born in Prague. In 1886 Steinitz won the first official match for the World Championship in chess against Hermann Zukertort to become the first World Champion in chess history. Steinitz is also considered to be the founder of the scientific approach to chess. A short biography and three games.

Gjakova: No player with a 100 percent score

5/17/2016 – Five rounds are played at the European Championship in Gjakova and no player can boast of a clean score. Ernesto Inarkiev (photo) and Radoslaw Wojtaszek both started with 4.0/4 but drew an entertaining game while Baadur Jobava - who also started with 4.0/4 - played a less entertaining draw. Gjakova: Three players lead with 4.0/4.

5/16/2016 – After four rounds three players lead the field at the European Championship with 4.0/4 each. Baadur Jobava played a fine game, in which he continually put pressure on his opponent. Ernesto Inarkiev was well-prepared and alert and Radoslaw Wojtaszek showed a lot of patience in a King's Indian structure which was rewarded when his opponent finally went wrong.

The wrong bishop

However there is one important exception: when the pawn is on the edge of the board and the bishop does not control the promotion square. Developing chess for disabled children in Russia

Nine leaders in Gjakova

5/15/2016 – After three rounds nine players share the lead with 3.0/3 at the European Championship in Gjakova and only two of them belong to the top ten of the starting list: Radoslav Wojtaszek and Maxim Matlakov. Anti-cheating at the Baku Olympiad

5/15/2016 – The 42nd Chess Olympiad will be held in Crystal Hall in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan (seating capacity: 25,000). After examining the location FIDE representatives were ecstatic: "I think Azerbaijan will organize the best Olympiad in the history of chess," said acting FIDE president Georgios Makropoulos. In an interview vice president Israel Gelfer described the anti-cheating measures that will be in place.

Elo Ratings: how underrated are the kids? (Part two)

5/14/2016 – In his first article studying the ratings disparities of juniors compared to adults, Ganesh Viswanath had studied the causal factors that might be responsible. In this second article, he posits, "I find that on average juniors are statistically underrated by up to 50 Elo rating points against adult players, and this bias increases with the age difference." Eric Rosenthal – remembering a chess friend

5/14/2016 – Swept up in the Bobby Fischer-inspired American chess awakening of the early 1970s, three high school boys from Florida, bonded over chess, travelling together to tournaments all over the state. Sadly, one of the trio, Eric, passed away in 1992. Decades later, Eric’s old chess buddies Mike and Marc conceived the idea of organizing a tournament in Eric’s honor, featuring this poignant remembrance of Eric by Marc.

Tom Hackney exhibits in World Chess Hall of Fame

European Championship: Favorites dominate in round 1

5/13/2016 – The European Championship 2016 is played in Gjakova, in the Republic of Kosovo. The field is strong: 245 players registered, five of them have a rating of 2700+, 60 can boast of a rating of 2600+. Top seed is Czech grandmaster David Navara with a rating of 2735. In the first of eleven rounds the favorites had almost no problems to win their games and dominated their opponents.

Chess fever in Cairo (2/2)

South African players crowned in Mauritius
