7/11/2023 – Whatever your idea of a traditional chess event is, it’s probably nothing like London’s ChessFest. While in most tournaments, the action takes place behind closed doors, accessible only to knowledgeable insiders and connoisseurs of the game, ChessFest turns all that upside down. This is chess writ large in the open air, performed in full public view, with mass participation the central goal. 7/10/2021 – On Sunday 18th July the charity "Chess in Schools and Communities" is staging the UK’s biggest-ever outdoor chess festival, ChessFest, in Trafalgar Square, London’s most famous public space. It is to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the children’s classic "Through the Looking Glass." 8/11/2018 – Given the recent history of Russian diplomatic resources being exercised to aid the re-election bids of FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, it is not terribly surprising that evidence is emerging of similar official government actions in support of the Russian candidate in 2018, Arkady Dvorkovich. However, in a new development, the Russian leader Vladimir Putin himself has apparently directly intervened in the Kremlin’s global campaign to get national chess federations to support his former deputy prime minister, adding weight to communiqués from embassies which are also surfacing. | Photo: kremlin.ru
