Correspondents from around the world contribute items to Chess Notes, and they include not only "ordinary readers" but also some eminent historians — and, indeed, some eminent masters. Chess Notes is located at the Chess History Center. Signed copies of Edward Winter's publications are currently available.
12/20/2010 – The bullfighter is revealed as Larry Christiansen. In giving the answers to the picture quiz the Editor of Chess Notes adds further illustrations on the theme of chessplayers and animals, including several shots of Alekhine’s Siamese cats and, alarmingly, a kibitzing circus lion. The quiz prizes are DVDs signed by masters at the London Chess Classic, and the three winners are now announced.
2/28/2009 – The Editor of Chess
Notes presents a compilation of photographs, engravings and sketches of
Howard Staunton (1810-1874). They include art-work by Sam Loyd and a group
photograph taken at Redcar, 1866 which has come to light only recently. Much
of Staunton’s life is shrouded in mystery, and the origin of some of the
pictures is unknown. Enjoy a rich compendium of historic illustrations.
5/6/2008 – Moving on from mysteries, the chess historian Edward Winter now turns to myths. Euwe's 'sportsmanship' in playing a rematch against Alekhine in 1937, allegations that Frederick Yates gassed himself, and the Lasker v Janowsky match wrongly called a world title contest. These cases are explored by the Editor of Chess Notes, who sets out the facts here.
12/26/2007 – An alleged prediction by Lasker. An obscure nineteenth-century chess treatise.
Steinitz’s daughter. Famous quotes attributed to Breyer, Jaffe and Mendelssohn.
The curious phrase ‘blind swine’. These and other matters are discussed
in this latest selection from Chess
Notes. Readers are invited to join in the hunt for clues.
